Guanhao is an interaction designer focused on digital experiences, tangible user interfaces‭, and human-environmental interactions. Grafting as the main topic of his research, he leverages the combination of user research, creative coding, and physical computing‭ to explore the alternative gaze of resilient and sustainable spaces where humans and nature coexist.‬

Between the Interfaces

Jan. 2023, New York
After the industrial revolution, we start cooperating with machines, relying on them to finish work. The way we communicate is through interfaces, knobs, buttons, sliders, dials, etc. Since personal computers, smartphones, and wearable devices have become ubiquitous, designers take our physical and tangible experiences in the real world, transform and build them in the virtual world. In this project, we try to imagine and speculate what teaching mechanisms, social value and structure would look like from experimental interfaces/interactions. (work in progress)

Treasure Map

Nov. 2022, New York
How do we experience the environment with interactive crafts? In this project, I use conductive threads and leather to create a technosocial treasure map. From tangible interface to user experience, it records your current location and lets the next person explore the treasure you have.

Game based on Generative Imagery

Nov. 2022, New York
A frogger game based on generative imagery, inspired by New York City. In this game, you must pass through many obstacles, which are representative elements of the New York Subway. Each time you collide with them, the game will ask you a question I met and attach it with a picture generated by DALL-E.

Quantum Choreography

Oct. 2022, New York
Quantum Design Jam is a one-week workshop held by The New School and IBM. Under the guidance of a physicist, Paul, we aim to explore Gabriel's idea, bridge the notion of Quantum Composer and TouchDesigner, to utilize body movement and strobe light to visualize the concept of superposition.

Time, Space, and Sound

2021-22, Taiwan
Time, Space and Sound is a series of self-initiated projects inspired by the class Recreating the Past. This is a collection of digital works made with Processing and p5.js. and based on three paintings: Joan Miró’s Blue II, Kazimir Malevich’s Suprematism, and Paul Klee’s Castle and Sun.

The Dagger
above an Ant
(The Hidden Girl)

July 2022, Taiwan
“You may think width, depth, and height are the only dimensions of the world, Hidden Girl, but you’d be wrong. You have lived your life as an ant on a sheet of paper, and the truth is far more wondrous.”
The Hidden Girl and Other Stories, Ken Liu

My Digital Pills

July 2022, Taiwan
How many digital buttons do you click one day? In the cyber world, we rely on those visual and sound reactions of clicking; they have to be as eye-catching and tasty as candy. I made a candy jar and documented all the buttons I clicked for a week; they are like digital medicines that help me release my stress but would be an addiction simultaneously.

Discursive Design (Taiwan Version)

Nov. 2021, Taiwan
In Digital Medicine Lab, we aim to bring impactful design books to students and designers in Taiwan. The Taiwan version of Discursive Design is useful for design education, and it helps us to join conversations about critical thinking, design fiction and design practice.

Always Open!

Sept. 2020, Taiwan
This work is a site-specific installation that reveals the extreme relationship between urban beings and convenience stores. Whenever visiting a foreign place, we are prone to visit all convenience stores in our sights. The latent qualities of urban beings are then at once revealed: we're phototactic insects; we're colonists on patrol.

Scanning Identity

July 2020, Taiwan
Attempting to combine technology with humanity, we scanned our palms to get the prints, then simplified the print to make a unique logo through programming. This visual identity system stands for the agency’s vision. On the scales of individuals, teams, companies, societies, and environments, everybody can have their own exclusive symbol; it represents the diverse voices in our society.
